Thebes as the “Anti-Athens”? Some Observations on the City’s Tragic Functions
Ita Hilton
Abstract
This article responds to the structuralist school of thought which posits the city of Thebes in Greek tragedy as negatively contrasted with the home city-state Athens. The author emphasises the mutability and diversity of Thebes’ depiction in the genre and explores the limitations of a schematic reading of tragic settings.
