Some Technical Terms from Greek Cuisine in Classical and Byzantine Literature
Maciej Kokoszko
Abstract
This article discusses different meanings of select terms which originated from the name of a Greek delicacy called karyke (καρύκη). Those are καρυκεύω, καρυκoπoιέω, ἐκκαρυκεύω, ἐπικαρυκεύομαι, καρυκεία and καρύκευμα. The author finds the nouns only loosely connected with the delicacy itself and used mainly to denote the process of spicing dishes. As for the analyzed verbs, they were employed mainly in a figurative meaning and thereby lost their direct connection with Greek cuisine.
