Der Elenchos des Parmenides (DK 28 B 6, 1–3 und B 7, 1–2)

Maria Marcinkowska-Rosół

Abstract

The article deals with Parmenides’ argument against the second way of inquiry (oujk e[stin). In the first part of the paper the fragments 6 (particularly ll. 1–3) and 7 (particularly ll. 1 f.) are subjected to an examination presenting numerous problems of their interpretation still unsolved (esp. the lacuna in 6, 3, the reference of tauvth~ in 6, 3, tou`to in 7, 1 and th`sd j ajf j oJdou` in 7, 2, the semantic value of the plural mh; ejovnta in 7, 1, the meaning of damh`i in 7, 1, the original context of 7, 1 f.). The second part of the article offers a new solution to these problems, consisting in the rearrangement of the fragments 6 and 7, 1 f. On the basis of this hypothesis a reconstruction of the Parmenidean elenchos of the second way of inquiry is proposed.
