Abstract
The article offers an examination of the Aristotelian classification of the natural philosophers in Physics I 4, 187 a 12–26. It focuses on such problems as the criterion of the division, the unity of the second group of the thinkers, the meaning of the phrase ἓν καὶ πολλά, the authorship of the intermediate-substance theory, the role of the notion of the opposites, and the function of the division in Aristotle’s argumentation in Physics I.
